Modified Frequency Modulation (MFM)

MODIFIED FREQUENCY MODULATION (MFM) describes an early drive encoding standard for hard drives and floppies. MFM encoding is still used as the standard encoding technique for floppies but cannot support the needs of today's higher capacity drives. MFM encoding is now considered obsolete for hard drive use. MFM components are not compatible with other drive type components.
